About Environmental Design
Developing and maintaining the artwork and other designs that decorate and brand our shared spaces requires collaboration between multiple parties (including the requesting department and unit, Marketing and Communications, Facilities Management, Accounting, etc.) alongside Enterprise Partners (including Brand Strategy and Management, University Architect, etc.).
So, if you are considering such an improvement, start with us first by contacting Aaron Pugh.
Depending on the scope and scale of requests, MarComm may have different standards of acceptance and scheduling for these projects, as well as different levels of involvement and different expected turnaround times. See below…
Environmental Design type 1 — simple photography
In general, certain non-classroom public and internal spaces may qualify for photography to be added to walls, and MarComm can assist with both the identification of ideal photos for your space as well as recommended materials/vendors and/or the placing of these orders. This is the default level of support that will be considered for most spaces/use cases and may take up to 2-3 months, depending on volume of photos and the level of support required.
Note: Photos must be stand alone wall elements and cannot*...
- Be placed together into a “collage”
- Contain ANY graphic designs, text overlays, logos, or other designed or logo elements.
- Be placed on any exterior building locations, in classrooms/lecture halls, or in certain public hallways/corridors
*Modifications and design work at this level constitutes a type 2 project (see below) instead.
Environmental Design type 2 —
multi-element concepts
Beyond photography, certain spaces may also qualify for the creation of more in-depth custom elements (which may include but not be limited to, wall and window wraps, imagery standoffs and lettering, and other materials) working together to convey a unified concept. These types of projects typically require a minimum of 3-4 months of production time and are limited to a max of 2 per semester across the entire school. If you qualify for one of these project requests, its priority is determined at the discretion of the Dean’s office, MarComm, Accounting, and Advancement Departments, and due to the nature of this work, exact placements, timelines, and design outcomes, etc. cannot be guaranteed. MarComm and these parties will work with you — and retain final say — in order to ensure this vision aligns with, and does not run contrary to established precedence for our spaces.
To ensure each project gets the level of design thinking they require, departments are not allowed to work directly with third party vendors or design firms (even ASU approved vendors) without MarComm’s oversight.
Additional info and tips
Need something urgent? Cleat or “museum mounted” posters with the schools mission and vision statement can also typically be provided on a quicker timeline by MarComm for placement. However, the design and dimensions of these cannot be modified and the unit must pay for their production and coordinate their install with facilities.
